A Gift to Me
22 December 2004
My husband is a regular “ba humbug” when it comes to Christmas. I don’t know why, but he doesn’t especially enjoy the holiday. I haven’t figured it out, since his family celebrates. So each year is hard to get him in the Christmas mood.
This year, he didn’t even want a tree, but we finally found one that pleased us both. There is a story behind our tree but I cannot share it with you before the holiday for reasons I will not mention. We had some friends over to help us decorate and he even wore a santa hat while we listened to holiday music.
Even though he’s a grinch at Christmas, each year he does something that means a lot to me. A few years ago, I was very upset because we’d be spending the holiday without family. And he surprised me by taking me all the way to Texas on Christmas Eve to spend time with my parents. My mom didn’t even know we were coming and when we showed up at their doorstep we both cried.
It’s always the little things that count the most. This year he didn’t let me down either. We drove to Texas last Friday for my sister’s college graduation. Graduation was Saturday morning, and we spent a few hours afterwards helping my parents pack her apartment (she’s moving to FL for grad school). Then mid-afternoon, we left to come back home.
Most of the way home, we listened to Christmas music. We have XM Satellite Radio and one of the country stations is doing all holiday music till Dec 27. So for the most part of the 9 hour drive home, he let me listen to country christmas music. He even sang along with one or two songs. It was the best.
As grumpy as he can be, he really comes through when I want him to.
