Cooling down the pool

Written on August 7, 2006 – 10:23 am

With this incredible heat we’re having this summer, the pool quickly gets unbearably hot, that it’s not enjoyable. We filled it up on Saturday and by Sunday afternoon it was getting warm. Not too bad, but give it another day or two of being in the direct sunlight and it’ll be almost as hot as a steam bath.

After a bit of searching, I think I might need to dump the ice from our freezer in there and see if it helps. It’s actually close to being balanced. I need to get some Alkalinity stuff, I went yesterday and they were out, but the chlorine levels are good and the pH is coming up. I’m using the fish tank trick…just add baking soda to increase pH. :) So now, if I can get some Alkalinity stuff, then it will be just about balanced. I’ve been checking it everyday, sometimes twice a day. It’s still cloudy, but I’m hoping that once I get it balanced with the alkalinity, that hopefully I can add some water clarifier. We also changed the filter yesterday. Holy cow, from all the algae that was in it before, the old filter was literally blue with a bunch of slime on it. Once we put a fresh filter in, the water pressure coming through the pump was much better. And it looked a little clearer.

I’m just worried about the heat. It’s what causes the aglae to grow. Wal-Mart has like 4 shelves full of nothing but gallon jugs of algaecide! It’s a problem for everyone with this crazy heat. I’m praying that keeping it balanced and possibly cooler with the ice every few days, that I can keep the algae in control. But I’m okay with having to drain and refill it once more before it gets put away in Oct. I just want to be able to enjoy it.

I spent the whole day in it yesterday. I got in around noon, after adding baking soda and shocking it. I got out and dried off for good around 6pm. That’s pretty much the entire afternoon. It was heaven. I cranked on the radio and put the wireless speaker outside so I could hear it from the pool and chilled out. It was a perfect day. I can’t wait to get in it tonight. I’m going to try to spend as much time in it from now till delivery. :)
