If you didn’t already know I’m a computer programmer. I have been for the past 6 years. I’ve only been programming in Visual Basic 6. But now that .NET has come out, we are finally working on making the switch. I’ve done a few small administrative applications in .NET (version 2005) and I have to say…I like it way better than VB6. I actually dread having to open up VB6 to make modifications to our application. I’d much rather work in .NET. I like the IDE way better. And .NET has features built-in that in VB6 took a nightmare way to make work. I look forward to the day that I can officially, finally uninstall VB6 from my computer. But I’m a long way from that.

At the same time, we upgraded to SQL Server 2005 and I created a new (more restricted) database. I’m working on migrating the data from the old database to the new one. More rules to enforce data integrity…as the old db had none! But of course that means cleaning up the data in the old db. Oi! What a mess it is. Orphaned records, links to records that don’t exist. Codes that don’t mean anything.

It’s definitely a learning experience…creating a database from scratch, migrating data to it and maintaining it; developing a major application from scratch and maintaining it as well.

I sure won’t have to worry about job security. LOL! I’ve got plenty on my plate to keep me busy for at least a year or two. Problem is we might be moving (physically moving our offices). If so, my boss wants to use that as the time we make the switch. Yikes! Word is we could be moving before the end of the year…so I have a lot of work to do and possibly very little time to do it.

Which means I shouldn’t be blogging. I should be working. LOL! I am, but this is my lunch break. :)
