To buy a laptop or not to buy a laptop. That is the question.
I have a big decision to make. You see, our iMac is old. Seriously. We bought it in 2008! That’s ancient in the computer industry. And I want a laptop. The appeal of sitting on the couch rather than at a desk in another room (we can’t put it in the living room), is just really enticing.
Frustrating!
The iMac was running horribly slow and would often just freeze. My husband and I were getting really frustrated and had given up even really using it much. We just ignored it and used the iPad, but sometimes we really did need to use it for something, and we’d have to plan the time, or start something and walk away while we wait for it to respond.
Then Apple released Mountain Lion, the latest version of their operating system. Husband did a fresh installation, after backing up our data, of course, and now it runs much better. It’s like we have a new computer now. It’s very responsive! iPhoto opens fast again and there’s no hesitation scrolling a gallery anymore. Safari just flies now!
The Catch
But, the new install hasn’t been bloated with additional apps. Right now the only stuff he’s added back is iPhoto and our media (photos, music and movies). He hasn’t even gotten all our iPhone and iPad apps back on there yet. Plus there are still several other apps I need to add back on.
But now I’m afraid to add more to it and slow it down again. Remember, it’s already four years old.
I’m trying to get back into blogging and let’s face it. Even though the WordPress apps for iPhone and iPad are great, they just don’t equal the experience of the desktop browser. Especially when dealing with photos in a post.
Decisions, Decisions
I’m thinking of trying out the “new” desktop for a while, but I hate adding all that stuff back on, then just come to realize it isn’t going to work. So then we’d be back to a slow, unresponsive desktop again.
So what to do? Stick it out with the desktop and hope it keeps ticking quickly? Or just get the laptop and keep the desktop bloat-free?
