The Birth Story
My water broke at 2:20 am on Tuesday, Oct 17, 2006. After getting a shower and packing up my things, Eric drove me to the hospital. We arrived around 4 am. Contractions began shortly after we were settled into a room. The nurse checked my progress and I was only 2 cm dilated and they couldn't feel Amelia's head. Because Amelia was wedged up in my rib cage and hadn't dropped into the birth canal, I was feeling the contractions in my chest area, rather than my abdomen. I was given an epidural and slipped off into blissful oblivion. When the epidural started to wear off, I was given something else and slept through the rest of my contractions. After 14 hours of labor, Amelia still hadn't dropped and I was only about 5cm dilated. Amelia was born via c-section at 4:36 pm. I thank God every day for the technology that allowed us both to survive the delivery. She is a beautiful, healthy little girl and growing and learning every day.
About the Site
Amelia's photo gallery was created for the purpose of sharing photos of my beautiful daughter with relatives who do not live nearby. She is the first and so far only grandchild on both sides of the family so her grandparents miss her dearly. This site is their way of watching her grow up from afar.
This site galleries are generated using phpFlickr and my Flickr account. I did it this way because Flickr is a very easy way to manage my photos online. I manage all the photos locally on my Mac using iPhoto, so it's very easy for me to upload photos from iPhoto to Flickr using the FlickrExport plugin.
So you wonder why go through all the trouble to make the site when family can just go to Flickr? Well, Flickr just isn't cute. And it's not the easiest site to get around at. The photos in this gallery do not represent all the photos in my Flickr account. I use it for other photos as well. So this site allows me to display only the photos of Amelia in an easily navigable way, in addition to providing a prettier interface.
The movies are maintained manually since Flickr only works for photos and we'd prefer not to use an online manager for videos. The videos are created using a Macbook Pro, the built in iSight camera and iMovie. We don't have a video camera, and we recently discovered how to record short movie clips using just the computer. Gotta love Apple. That's why so far all of the videos are taken in our living room, where we can place the laptop at one end of the room. :)
